Siggraph 2012 – Day 2 – Behind the Scenes – Making of “The Avengers”
The afternoon studio production session – Assembling the VFX for Marvel’s The Avengers was pure awesomeness! Panelists from both Weta Digital and ILM showed lots of behind-the-scenes footage and discussed the process of assembling some of the VFX shots for the movie. Due to the large scale of the movie, multiple VFX houses worked on various characters. Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) worked on the Hulk, and also worked on updating Iron Man’s suit.
Because of the huge scale of The Avengers, different visual effects houses produced various characters and FX shots for the film. Industrial Light & Magic scored the Hulk and was also asked to update Iron Man’s suit. Guy Williams, a VFX Supervisor at Weta Digital says they worked on over 400 shots with a crew of about 300. The turnover time for them was about 7months.
In creating the VFX for the Hulk, the panelists credit actor Mark Ruffalo as the best cinematic incarnation of the Hulk yet. Again, no pictures or video was allowed, so here are some behind-the-scenes footage from around the web.
